I just saw this photo of the recovery of a Renault FT17 tank from a scrapyard in Afganistan, and amongst the general 1960s Soviet truck bits, and US War Aid DUKWs and Studebaker parts etc, there is what seems to be the fuselage of a Soviet copy of a B29 bomber. Cool photo.

the afghan army had FT17s in the 1920s though, much discussion how they got them whether russian copies, finnish copies or original french.

The POles have one in their museum which they think was made in France in 1917 or 1918 and given to Polish Army of Gen. Haller (so called “Blue Army”) on the western front, After I WW 120 FT-17 were transported with whole Blue Army to Poland. Lots of them were lost to Bolsheviks during 1919-1920 war. During 1920s most of captured FT-17 were gifted by Kremlin to some warlord in Afghanistan

so that is one well travelled tank!

2 FT17s were gifted to the Patton Museum in 2003 and one was gifted to Saumur later. There does seem to be some traffic about the fourth one being found and sent to poland.
