Hi Lads

Where M1897 trench guns used in the ETO & MTO or where they just used by Marines in the PTO?

Cheers

Rob

Hi Rob

This picture in SPEARHEADING D-DAY is of German POW's under the watchful eye of a US MP armed with a Winchester M1897 Shotgun with fixed bayonet.

The M1897 and M1912 were issued to MP's in the ETO and MTO but proved very popular in the PTO with US Marines.Excellent in close quarter jungle fighting and stopping Banzai charges

Image

Don't forget the other pump action shotguns in use with US armed forces in WWII

Stevens Model 520-30
Stevens Model 620A
Ithaca Model 37

Cheers

Martyn

Or to answer the underlying question No!! you can't carry one as either a paratrooper or an infantryman in Europe.

Cheers lads.

I was just wondering because in Call of Duty 3 one of the 29th privates is using one, and the germans where terrified of them in WW1

Games like to have a nice list of options - instead of Rifle M1 Like it or lump it. :(

It was seen by many as a war crime, but wether anybody was terrified is probably largely propoganda. (Sounds good in a book written for a US/Brit audience.)

*Rewrites history so he can use a M1897 when he does MP*

So the majority were issued to the PTO?

ERM !! begging yer pardon people....there are pictures of MPs using them to guard German prisoners in the ETO

1 picture in Canfields book.......and 1 picture in Dogs Of War......of a 3rd Div MP armed with a Model 12 shotgun in France 1944

but dont go thinking the regular GI was running round the Siegfried Line with a shotgun otherwise the "police" WILL be round

but yes 70% of shotguns went to the Pacific.....and the other 30% went to stateside Prison guards/MP/and ETO gunnery training schools and recreational "flak farms"

Regards

Lloyd

PS Martin dont forget the short barrel Model 11 semi auto......:-)
