I've got a brilliant Soviet Defence Ministry book on the wartime VDV I need translating, however I don't have the £1000+ it would cost professionaly!

Have you got any scans of it or something? I'm very interested to take a look at it! :)

Edit: Oh and I've found another very useful link:

I know the main thrust of that article isn't the historical aspect of the VDV but it does get it wrong on two counts. - Edit: Oops! I've just noticed it's a 1946 intelligence briefing. I was fooled by the way it talked about wartime as being in the past. Still, the comments about errors still stand

1 - They made rather more than one large scale drop during the war.

2 - While the drop referred to didn't achieve it's objective immediately (and was immensely costly for reasons similar to the failure of Market Garden) a large airborne force remained at large behind German lines for several months (the longest airborne operation in history incidentally) and did ultimately participate in forcing the river - their original objective.

This is a much better survey of the wartime experience of the VDV

Try reading "Inside the Blue Berets" by Stephen Zaloga (for a change LOL) if you want a proper historical account of the VDV from the 30's to Grozny... a very good book!
