while digging through the sand at some bunkers on UTAH beach this year, along with lots of German & US ammo,we found a spent russian round.
i know Russian(i use the term "Russian" as an umbrella title)troops were based around there, but wouldnt they have had german weapons rather than Russian for ease of supply?

There was plenty of eastern european and weapons and equipment on the Normandy coast during 1944.
Some of the German units in Normandy where there for a break after there action on the Ost front.
Then brought with them plenty of Soviet kit, and Ukranian, Polish and other soldiers too.
Unlike the other beaches where Russian and Czech conscripts would build defenses but not put up a stiff fight, Omaha Beach was defended by the crack 352nd Division, veterans of fighting in Russia.
Allied intelligence did not know of their presence at Omaha.

cheers Wayne,we were a little dumbfounded when we found the round(just a single round among other German 7.92)on UTAH.i'd forgotten about it until reading the threads on here.
we also found a brand new spent live 7.62 round in one of the bunkers, someone test firing a weapon out to sea perhaps!

This picture was posted on a similar thread on this forum recently.

From memory it shows Georgians in German service with Russian weapons.

Most German Infantrie Divisions were full of oddball nationalities, I really wouldn't rule it out - especially if there was a movement orders tits up. What book is it in?
