So… In conclusion… (or maybe not)

Introduced to stop AT Rifle rounds as used by our Russian allies…

Used in the west to stop HESH/HEAT rounds...

Ps… do you see the mesh skirts on the Eastern front?

I've not seen it in any pictures but German armour isnt my interest, despite a liking for the PIIIL :D .

I'd never say never though as HEAT rounds were usually issued to non-anti tank artillery as their AP allocation. though, as with all things RKKA, you'll find exceptions to this.

My interest is in all 1916 - 2008 armour....

Ok may have read more about German kit than Russian... however I do know my enemy...

Be they Brit, Yank or Russian...

Like the strange Russian liking for the British Lend lease Valentine... because of its armour… why

Read a very interesting article by a Russian Tank Cdr who fought his war from inside a Lend Lease M4… how they had to guard them to stop soldiers taking the leather from the seats etc to repair their shoes and how when one tipped over it saved his life…. As the tank that took the lead was then destroyed…. 8)

The Valentine's weight puts it into the Light Tank class according to the Red Army system. It was small, making it harder to hit, reliable and, perhaps most important, it's front plate is 65mm. Not many Light Tanks can boast that!

Most of them were used in the South because of proximity to the Persian supply route though you'll find them turning up in most Fronts except the most northerly.

The Red Army nickname for the Grant/Lee was 'the grave for seven brothers'.
Most British/US armour just didn't make the grade for the Ostfront, although the tens of thousands of Studebaker trucks and jeeps
were most useful. Of course let's not forget the cans of 'Second Front'(Spam).
The Panzerfaust was a most effective weapon. When I went to Berlin and saw the Soviet War Memorial near the Reichstag with the two T34s
mounted either side, along with the legend that they were the first Russian tanks to enter Berlin. Not a mark on either of them, the first T34s to enter
Berlin would have been in flames shortly afterwards.

They were probably repaired - even during the battle. Most of the shots of the 'heavily damaged' Soviet Tanks that you see from Berlin are actually ones being cannibalised by the repair shops.

There's a T34 Model 1943 at Studzianka(?) in Poland that clearly has 'plugs' placed in the armour.

The best performance of the army/divisional repair shops I'm aware of during an offensive operation is an SU76 being put back into action seven times.

I'll dig the figures out when I get home tonight. Oddly enough crew survival rates actually improved during the war.

Though you'll like the Red Army nickname for tankers - 'Tushonka'

remember Google is your friend.

None at all, the equipment didn't change significantly enough so it can't be that. It'd be interesting to have a more detailed look though.

Here's some equipment losses to be going on with.

http://www.battlefield.ru/content/view/253/123/lang,en/

It's difficult to tell much from it though because, as should be clear, if an AFV was knocked out, repaired and knocked out again, at this level, it was counted as 'lost' twice.

Which is one reason why I never really argue about the numbers. 'Accuracy' all hinges on your assumptions.
