My fellow medic's & signatories of the Geneva Convention!

I understand that this may be "Restricted information"...and even seen as collaboration with the enemy, but...

As a medic of the US-2nd Ranger Battalion (Ranger Re-enactments!) i have just aquired a leather German medic's pouch/bag in great condition, which i would like to use as part of my "Normandy/post-Normandy" impression - however, i need to get hold of some German bandages/dressings etc to put in it, and i wondered if either any of you guys had some spare's that you could sell me or if you could point me in the right direction as to where to aquire some from?

Also, could you give me some pointers as to the types of equipment that would have been carried in the pouch by a German medic in Normandy - i presume that they would have had much the same as we (the Rangers) carried, but i know very little about German medic's, and i don't want to get it wrong...so some guidance would be greatly recieved! :)

Oh, and by the way...in addition to the pouch/bag, i have also aquired a German medic's water-bottle & cup too - i think they should look good as "spoil's of war" and help to add a touch of realism to my/our impression! 8)

Many thank's...Guy. ("Doc-Minty" - Ranger Re-enactments)

Hallo Guy,

What sort of Medic's Pouch is it - Belt Pouch, Shoulder strap Pouch, other ?. I have some translated list of contents, pictures and other reference information which you are welcome to but it would be useful to know what type of pouch it is.

Hi Kevin,

It is a really flattering "over the shoulder" number - with matching neck strap...in a simply stunning shade of dark-tan!

Seriously though mate - it is the brown leather version with a removable - devided contents tray, about 7wx9hx2 inches deep, with a 2x brown leather hold down strap's on the front, and a leather carrying handle on the top.

On the reverse, at the top is writen: D.R.K. Sanitatslarger. Babelsberg. 1

I hope this is of help!

Regard's...Guy. (Doc-Minty - Ranger Re-enactments)

Hello Guy,

It appears that you have a DRK Shoulder Pouch as carried by the German Red Cross rather than the German Army. The first attachment should show some of the contents although over time others get added purporting to be original. Anyway a rough list of contents (I have those for the Army packs but those for the DRK below are from a 1930 book) would be (Small and Large Packs):

Klein - Small

6 Verbandpackchen - 6 Dressing Packs
Grosses dreieckige Tuch Large Triangular Bandage
2 etwa 10cm breite Binden 2 x 10cm wide Bandages
1 Packchen Rollwatte 1 Pack Rolled Cotton-Wool
1 Taschen mit Nah-, Sicherheits-
und Stecknadeln nebst Zwirn 1 Pouch/Packet Safety-Pins
1 Tropfflaschen Baldriantropfen 1 Dropper Bottle Baldrian Tincture
1 Tropfflaschen Hoffmanstropfen 1 Dropper Bottle Hoffmans Tincture
2 Stuckchen Zucker 2 pieces/cubes Sugar
Nicht zugespitze Schere Scissors (Rounded-ends)
8cm breite elastische Binde 8cm wide elastic Bandage

Gross - Large

8 Verbandpackchen 8 Dressing Packs
10 Mullkompressen 10 Gauze Compresses
4 packchen Presswollwatte je 20g 4 Packs Compressed Cotton Wool (20g)
3 Mullbinden von 6,8 und 10cm
Breite 3 Gauze Bandages 6, 8 and 10cm wide
3 Cambricbinden 8cm breit 3 Cambric (Linen) Bandages 8cm wide
Komprimierte Verbandwatte Compressed Dressing Pads (Cotton Wool)
Einige Pflasterverbande (Elastoplast) Single Plaster Bandage
1 Brandbinde 1 Burns Bandage
1 Abbinder 1 Tourniquet
6 Sicherheitsnadeln 6 Safety Pins
1 Verbandschere 1 Bandage Scissors
2 dreieckige Tucher (1 grosses und 1 kleine) 2 Triangular Bandages (1 Large, 1 Small)
2 Cramerschienen 2 (lengths) Cramer Splint
Baldriantabletten Baldrian (Tincture) Tablets
Salmiakstift Ammonia (Smelling Salts)
Splitterpinzette Splinter Tweezers
1 Tube Vaselin oder Lanolin 1 Tube Vaseline or Lanolin

I will find some pictures of the items if interested.

Hello Guy,

Attached is a larger picture of the DRK contents, and a few examples of bandages and instruments. Not strictly DRK in some case but German Army nonetheless.

Richard Underwood, for example, sells reproduction bandages for £8-£10 as do several others (links on this site). If you are not worried about matching contents exactly then there are other reproduction items such as Aspirin boxes. otherwise you could search on Ebay (particularly www.ebay.de - Militaria) for things like 'DRK'. Note that some of the German WW2 DRK had distinctive markings.
