Hi all,
I am wanting to get my good lady an ATS officers uniform, I have done quite a lot of research on the uniform its self and have found quite a lot of information on these pages going back years, all the way back to page one.
Although my wife is reasonably average size wise she is a bit of a stickler for getting something that fits her correctly and looks the part authenticity wise, to this end I think I will be going down the bespoke maker route.
There has been many suggested makers and suppliers of various items of attire throughout this section over the years but I would like to know the latest updated people in this field if possible, as I suspect that quite a number of suggestions in past years have fallen by the wayside or just vanished altogether.

Being in Huddersfield a company that 'sounds' to offer what I'm looking for is 'The History Bunker' in Leeds, reviews look good but I would be more inclined to go with suggestions made from the knowledgeable members of this forum.

So as a recap:
Made to measure
Authentic as possible in 'all' aspects
Quality of workmanship
Supplier/s of very good reproduction or authentic accessories such as; Cap, Shoes, Bag, Sam Brown, Tie, shirt, Stockings

Please do not suggest any company from outside the UK (especially India)

Sorry if this seems rather fussy but I have had a few dealings with so called uniform replicator manufacturers in the UK and abroad that frankly should not be in business.

Thank you for your time.

Hi,

If you want good quality reproduction kit for your good lady then I can only recommend Della Rebours who is a tailor and specialises in period costume. In fact she has the war office tailors' guide for WW2. She's not cheap though, but the uniform will be correct and will fit perfectly. She lives on Harrogate so not a million miles from you. Mind, she's not speedy because she's a one man band and a perfectionist with lots of orders. You can go with other suppliers, but my experience is that they are no where near as good. Depends how much you want to spend. With Della, you get what you pay for, a bespoke high end reproduction that passes muster. If you're interested let me know and I'll pm details.

Thank you for the valued info - been in contact with Della and will be placing an order.

Now just have to locate the 'other' accessories that go with it all.

Many thanks again.

I wouldn't bother with a bag. Most ATS never had one. I use a gas mask bag which was far more common. Also Sam Browne. It's up to you but not all ATS officers wore one. Later in the war many simply had a cloth belt. Della will make this and the hat if you specify it. If you do decide on the Sam Browne the no shoulder strap. ATS did not wear this.
Shoes will be the hardest thing to get hold of. Originals are few and far between and very expensive. S of F sell repros (although not officer's). They're very uncomfortable by all accounts. Depicting an officer gives you a bit more leeway as the shoes will have been private purchase. Have a look around at brown parade shoes (not ideal, but at least they're plain and sturdy). You can sometimes pick up something under vintage shoes on ebay if you put the right search parameter in (brown, lace-up flat shoes), but it's difficult. Beware when purchasing originals (if you can find any). Vintage sizing is smaller than modern (especially width) so make sure you ask for measurements rather than going just on size.
Good luck

G
