Just thought i'd compile a list of some of the firearms that the SOE, OSS and other secret forces had designed from scratch or modified and trailed for possible operational use:

Norm Gun
Welgun
Welrod 9mm and .32
Silencer for Sten (fitted to Mk2's and Mk5's after considerable modification)
"Woodsman" .22 Pistol (converted to machine pistol)
American Hi-Standard Automatic Pistol (Silencer produced)
Sleeve Gun "Welwand" (Silenced Mk1 .22 one shot Mk2 .32 one shot)
Bicycle Pump Gun (Idea rejected)
FP-45 Liberator Pistol (.45 hidden in mass production as Flare Projector Caliber .45)
M1 Carbine (Modified for silencer)
MD1 3.7 in Gun
Spigot Gun (And other modified types including Tree)
Welpen / Enpen / Stinger (.22 gun hidden as a Pen)
Welpipe (.22 gun hidden as a Pipe)
Welwoodbine (.177 hardened steel projectile gun hidden as a Woodbine)
Welcheroot (.22 rim fire gun hidden as a cigar)

Further lists will include the firearms the special units used that were in standard issue, specially designed explosives and hand to hand weapons and also their extensive radio and field equipment selections :D

The one i like the most is the Explosive Rat!! For some reason always makes me smile!! The Militia in Iraq were hiding explosives in dead donkeys, etc. Just reminds me.

The Liberator always crops up - but it was never used in Eupore. The Governments-in-exile refused to have it droped. The only places I found it wused were in SE Asia.

Heres a pic of the silenced M1 Carbine you refer to. Its located in Springfield Mass USA at the Springfield Armory Museum.

I got to see the gun up close. The curator did mention something about it being modified for the British.

Didn't know OSS/Jeds used M2 carbines? Or does the display cover post WW2 aswell?

Spoke to a 1 SAS veteran at Beltring many years ago, he was shown some of the products of the 'Ministry of dirty tricks' as he called it, including the exploding rats, exploding door nobs and binoculars that shot a spike out of the eye piece when the focus was altered, they were to just leave them hanging around in enemy areas because as he says most soldiers will pick up a pair of bins if they find them, have a look through them and adjust the focus, the rest you can work out :? Really nice bloke though, earnt an M.M. in n. Africa when him and a mate got a group of jerry halftracks, he was pulling the pins on the grenades and throwing them up to his mate who was bowling them into the backs of the vehicles, those lads must have had b#lls of steel.
