Anyone know what this is, or should I say what period it is as it is obvious what it is really ... it is marked as US WWII ? .. saw in an antiques mall recently.

I haven't seen one this shape, or with a tap and breather tube, at least I assume its a breather tube near the cap, there are no markings at all, there is a number under the filler cap, (didn't take a pic of that ..duh .. ) and what looks like a number 86 near the filler .. other than that nothing, the paint job looks like an after effect too ..??

Its a British AFV Drinking Water Tank.

I believe them to be post-war but others may know better.

It is WWII as it is the second pattern water tank for Cromwell tanks. The first pattern was initially made of brass and had a screw cap. They were then made of steel and the later ones had the flip up lid and were galvanized.

Three were officially stowed in the turret but can often be seen on a trackguard to free up some much needed space.

As I said, the No 86 did cross my mind as possibly being a date reference ..??
