I was browsing the Daily Mail online archive and came across this interesting set of advice to a new recruit from an old hand, published on March 27th 1940. It is useful in providing some information on how kit was actually used rather than how regulations say it should be used and how re-enactors have interpreted it. Its interesting that he recommends getting a metal soap dish (four years before an issue aluminium one was introduced) and waterproof bags for shaving gear so it doesn't make the rest of the kit damp. He also advises the new recruit to replace the brass buttons on his battledress with plastic ones to prevent the thread being cut and buttons lost regularly, small tins to hold items in the pack and linen bags for clean and dirty clothing to make it easier to find in a crowded barrack room.

Some nice pointers, most of which I that have already sorted Comrades, I bag everything in my packs if possible. I have Russian, Italiano, British looking bags/tins for most of my personal kit just to make life easier in packing/unpacking and finding stuff in those directions of interest I maintain.
