Can anyone tell me what colour I should use to paint a BEF helmet.

Hi, have a squint in the kit restoration section, you will find a number of threads about this topic. There seems to be various opinions on this, i would favour the basic service brown, but thats just me and dont think you can go far wrong as a generic colour option

Cheers
Steve

As we were told when we got ours painted the colour is "a greeny browny baby poo".

Have a look on our website at the 2nd essex B.E.F archive you will see the colour we had matched to an original.

Thank you again for your kind help, I don't think anyone will know if it was a BEF coloured helmet or not, so I've had a change of mind its now going in my civilian side of my 70th VE display, painted black with white W, just given it one coat of black which will do, sorting out W stencil.

Hi Luke
I borrowed it of my son in-law :) , yes its exteriorgloss black, not using it until May so I will leave it outside a couple of hours a day, not that worried though, its only going in a lockable glass cabinet at my local Library with my other civilian & military items.

Ha, well that's alright then! Leave it out in the weather a bit and it will look great!

Thank you Luke, when I painted my American helmets, I was told to wire wool them to take the shine off, don't think I will try this though, like you say, leave it out side and let it fade/weather.
