Hi all

Having spent the last few months researching furiously and having my interest well and truly piqued, I have taken the plunge and formed a new group. More Majorum LHG.

The group at the moment consists of me, with occasional support from my better half as a membet of the Hadfield-Spears Ambulance unit.

My primary focus is 13 DBLE but I envisage the scope of the group to include any of the units making up 1ere DFL.

I'm not proposing a formal group as such, more of a loose association of reenactors with a common, niche, interest.

Based in the South.

Hi

Please excuse my ignorance and I am not intending to be rude in any way its just that I don't know what your abbreviations stand for , so I find it rather difficult to get the full meaning of what you are saying .
A few more details and explanation such as Hadfield-Spears is that a company name , as in business , would be appreciated . How far south is south ?
Thanks , sounds like an interesting project having been an Ambulance man back in the 1980s it interests me to see what you may be doing .

Rob

No problem Rob.

1ere DFL - Premiere Division France Libre
13 DBLE - 13 Demi-Brigade Legion Etrangere

The Hadfield Spears Ambulance unit was a volunteer medical unit originally raised by a Lady Hadfield and Mrs Spears. It originally consisted of English voluneer nurses, female drivers supplied my the Mechanised Transport Corps and male drivers/orderlies by the Quaker Friends Ambulance, Medical personnel were French and it later drew members fromfrom French colonial Africa. It served with the various incarnations of 1ere DFL throughout the war.

Thanks Rob. I think it's a sadly overlooked area but then the campaigns in North Africa, Italy and Southern France are in general overlooked by the majority in favour of north-west Europe. Understandable perhaps, but unfortunate.

I've recently been "researching" (the odd Google) the legion in WWII, I'm based in Gloucester and would like to discuss what you're doing.

Thanks Con & Peter. If you're on Facebook, look up More Majorum LHG. I'd love to discuss further and you can never have too much information :-)

Peter

I asked a friend to search for the group. They found it by searching for Majorum LHG. Try that. In the meantime I'll see if I can find you. If I can I will add you.

I've been trying to source insignia and equipment, have tried sites suggested elsewhere on this forum, without much luck. Any ideas?

Depends on what you're looking for. Monty's Locker sell various FRANCE shoulder titles and a 1ere DFL formation patch suitable for use with US supplied uniform. I'm making my own badges for earlier use; formation badge, BD collar patches, rank etc. These were quite often home made or made locally in theatre in varying quality anyway so a certain crudeness is actually quite accurate.

You should be able to pick up quite a lot of equipment on ebay if you keep looking. Leather equipment appears rarely unfortunately though. French sites are your better option. If you're looking for early war uniform suitable for Norway then you will struggle. Pantalons Golf do turn up occasionally but I've yet to see a suitable Vareuse.

Also try and get along to some of the bigger militaria fairs in Kent as quite a lot of continental traders come ovet. I licked up my boots from a French trader at W&P last year.
