Depends which battalion.

If your doing 2nd its HBTS (also can be Wools) with Leggings & Roughouts or Jump Boots.

If you fancy doing 5th Rangers like i do its Wool Trousers & Shirt with Jump Boots.

Dale is 2nd Rangers.

If you've joined N44 you will probably be 2nd Rangers unless you fancy doing 5th Rangers which is lead by me (we are still with Dale and N44 just do a different Battalion)

Hey Scott, Dale does 2nd Rangers, we wear HBT shirt and trousers, with M41 and Jump Boots. We do sometimes wear leggings, but mostly it's just the boots.

As for who's better, you would have to make your own mind up, but, you could listen to my rather biased opinion :D :P

Problem is my Cheerleading Squad got arrested last night for a Public Disorder Offence.

But i will happily stand by the fact the 5th Rock hehe.

Nah my aim is to educate more people on the 5th Rangers who like their 1st, 3rd, 4th & 6th Brothers tend to be overshadowed by the 2nd Rangers.

Scott,
You're in the 2nd Rangers now mate and we'll look after you and take you under our wing. Spoke to your dad last night and I've told him that we'll give you as much assistance as we can. Any kit questions or general questions on what we do or what you'll need should come through N44's own forum or you can send me a PM on here and I'll respond as soon as I see it , or you can phone me any time . Welcome aboard mate and I'm sure you'll get on well with the rest of the lads in N44 whether their doing 5th Rangers or 2nd Rangers.

Andy,
I'm considering lending you some men for certain events and dioramas if the lads are up for it. Most have wools and I'm sure we could potentially buy a couple of spare helmets to paint the 5th Rangers diamond on. As for the 1st, the lads have bought helmets, Scrolls, T-Handle shovels and early gas mask bags so we could maybe do that more often as well. I don't really need to have 30-40 2nd Rangers and I don't want to seem greedy!

Hi Scott,

welcome to re-enacting and also good luck with N44' they're a fine bunch. I'm sure the guys will get you squared away with what you need.

Can I make two recommendations though:

Firstly, conduct some research on the unit(s) you are thinking of portraying. That way this should help you make a decision as to what you want to portray and what this entails re: commitment and kit aquisition. Bear in mind that you will be wearing this kit at evenst and portraying somebody who has done this for real so it is important to get it right, you owe it to them.

Secondly, in light of the above, can I recommend that you get hold of a copy of 'The Battalion' The 2nd Ranger Battalion in WW2 by Robert Black. The book is readily available on Amazon. This should be your first purchase as it will give you almost all the information you'll need at this stage on the Battalion. Your impression is based on research.

This hobby is not cheap and it takes time to get your impression together. To answer your question on kit, well despite some myths the 2nd Ranger Battalion wore both Wool trousers and shirts and HBT's during WW2.
Issue items on joining the unit consisted of Wool trousers, shirts, M1938 dismounted leggings, Roughout boots, M1941 Jacket, garrison cap, M1 helmet, Enlisted mans trouser belt. Add to this G.I. issue underwear, Tie and personal items. For Normandy (and other periods) you will need HBT trousers and shirt and also overalls for training and also combat wear (optional) Do not buy an M43 Jacket, they were not 'officially' issued to the Battalion although some of the men did 'aquire' them. The list can go on and on and thats not including items such as Enlisted man's Tunic, Jumpboots, shoepacs etc.

Webbing will be dependant on your role within the group but you will need a Pistol belt, canteen, 1st aid pouch, mess tin, KFS and an M1928 haversack (Doughboy pack) as a minimum.

I have not posted this to put you off and if I or any of my group can be of assistance then by all means ask away.

Good luck with it and look forward to meeting up with you at an event this year.

Cheers Dave
