Looking at some of the photos, I was wondering - did all services of the Civil Defence paint the boot size on the wellington boot or was it more just the AFS and Fire watchers?

Also - whats the deal with turning the tops down on them?

If you are not tall then they can rub at the back of the knee/leg. Even if you are tall they can do that.

... and of course they were commonly referred to as "gumboots" - I grew up in the '50s and that's what everyone called them, never "wellies".
