As you may see from the post in the general section, we are going to organise a drop in advice centre at War and Peace revival this year. As well as practical help, I would like to be able to offer links to reading material and internet sites that may be very helpful in achieving an authentic civilian Home Front portrayal. I have my own favourites, but others may have found other useful sources which they may like to share with others. I wish to avoid the many books that focus on the 40's image of American glamour and designer fashion garments and am looking for sources that give a more realistic account of Life on the Home Front. Any suggestions that could be included on a sources list would be really appreciated.
Jude

Where do we start?!

I find diaries are good for everyday detail. I would suggest
"The War and Uncle Walter", see: http://www.amazon.co.uk/War-Uncle-Walte ... cle+walter
and
"The Real Dad's Army" (not just about the Home Guard) see: http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Real-Dads-A ... 0670919802
and (as a dramatized diary)
"Housewife, 49", see: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Housewife-49-DV ... B000M5KVDY

I would also suggest wartime films such as:
"Millions Like Us", "Went the Day Well" and several others.

Also Ministry of Information films etc, to be found in the Imperial War Museum archive, such as: http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/ ... 1060006248
and Pathe News films, such as:
http://www.britishpathe.com/video/home- ... home+front

Right - that's only a drop in the ocean, but it's a start!

Best wishes, Owen.

Owen.
Thanks for your input.
Tall order I know, but there are sometimes source material that we stumble upon that others probably wouldn't unless directed there.

True, Jude. It's always too easy to assume someone else knows about the same stuff as you do.
