Ther's no guarantee that a General Staff Officer would be there to provide a soft landing, perhaps the VDV instructors offered the same advice as our instructors did, 'wait until you are ten feet(metric equivalent)
off the ground and then jump, you can jump ten feet without hurting yourself can't you'.
