58 MT to be precise.

It wasn't very dirty because Sakharov used lead tampers in the construction of the bomb to limit the fallout. If they had used uranium ones then the yield would have been 100 MT and the resulting fallout would have made half of Northern Russia glow in the dark.

The fireball touched the ground, reached nearly as high as the altitude of the release plane, and was seen and felt almost 1,000 km (621 miles) from ground zero. The heat from the explosion could have caused third degree burns 100 km (62 miles) away from ground zero. The subsequent mushroom cloud was about 64 km (40 miles) high (nearly seven times higher than Mount Everest) and 40 km (25 miles) wide. The explosion could be seen and felt in Finland, even breaking windows there. Atmospheric focusing caused blast damage up to 1,000 km (621 mi) away. The seismic shock created by the detonation was measurable even on its third passage around the Earth. Its Richter magnitude was about 5 to 5.25.

Since 50 Mt is 2.1×1017 joules, the average power produced during the entire fission-fusion process, lasting around 39 nanoseconds, was about 5.4×1024 watts or 5.4 yottawatts. This is equivalent to approximately 1.4% of the power output of the Sun.

Many of the babushki nekagda got the chance after the war to have any children. They had the same problem getting dates as the girls in Accrington did after July 1916.

Anyway - don't underestimate those museum babushki! They often know as much about the museums exhibits, and subject history as published academics do!

I understand the project had talked about 200mt... and that despite the Soviet leadership being keen to demonstrate to the Capitalists just how strong they were, someone somewhere had a quiet word and pointed out just how much damage that would cause to the Motherland herself because of course the test would be done inside of the Motherland.

And just for once, somebody actually decided that much of a mess would be a bad thing.

But the theory was proven, the same weapon could have yielded 200mt with a minor reconfiguration.

There is a groovy video somewhere on Youtube of the actual dropping of this weapon - watching that Bear surge upwards after release of the device, which was as you can see just flippin enormous!

All of these things went largely in the bin when both sides realised that causing total widespread destruction with nukes wasn't the way forward. Smaller warheads on more accurate delivery systems were the best way to kill hard targets, although the Soviets did retain 25mt warheads for use against Cheyenne Mountain - the NORAD HQ buried deep under a mountain (the one you see in the film "wargames"). A dozen of these "crowd pleasers" were destined for that target, to basically vapourise the whole damned mountain and everything under it!

Disturbing to know, that the prospective Republican VP believes she is living in the End Times and will see Christ return in her life time.

Yes, she is a little scary.... I'd like to see what the Mock the Week boys suggested... Sarah Palin vs Vladimir Putin in a knock down drag out hunting death match!

I know who my money is on... not the "hockey mom", definitely the former KGB operative 8)

As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right next to, they are right next to our state.

Riggggggggght. What are you babbling about woman?

In any case, Alaskas' proximity to Russia is meaningless.

1. A person can live next door to a brain surgeon all their life and still not know the first thing about neurology.
2. What part of Russia is Alaska next to? Moscow? Pieter? The Ural industrial belt?

No. It's next to Chukhotka.

Chukhotka? Right. That's like saying you're an expert on British politics and culture because you've been to St Kilda.
