Nice site Gripweed!

I've found that to appreciate how things were done and to try and emulate them, study the film makers and photographers of the day to see what you can pick up. It's not just jumping from hedge to hedge or firing off a few rounds - subjects were filmed in a specific way. The smiling Yank, the stern faced Russian, the heroic German and so on.

Watch the newsreels of your favoured nation (theres loads on You Tube) watch films like 'Triumph of the Will' and see how Leni Rlefenstahl shot it.

:D Heres my last attempt ...

Excellent!!... My only suggestion would be to make the clips shorter...cutting from one shot to the next a little quicker... :D :D :D ... But Top stuff... some of the best I've seen

Totally agree with you on that. After a few watches i thought myself that some bits linger on a bit to long. All part of the learning curve though - can't wait to do my Victory Show 2007 epic :D

You know that's something that occurs to me, for all our 'authenticity' the one thing that gets in the way is the fact that so often we just don't look like the images we have of the time. Taking you're example, the best pictures I have seen of Soviet re-enactors are the ones where people look bored, tired and dirty.

I hope to try making a short film sometime soon, be interesting to try and will get me away from bloody digicams!

Yeah, I know what you mean

That said, hangovers achieve much the same job. One of these days we really will have to get that photoshoot done...

Hang-overs are ok, but if you can't drag the Guys out of bed!!... :x :x May like to add that Crabtree's effort are excellent .Not only are the reenactors playing the part well...but the original (I'm guessing it is) Voice over provides the atmosphere and drama.... Which is often lacking in "Period reconstruction filmwork" :D :D :D

It sounds great, bloody annoying thing is that I have to wait until I get home to watch it.

I find we look our best (from a haggard / weary point of view) by the Sunday morning of a show, so i try and save photoshoots till then. :D

After 2 nights on the sauce, 2 late nights, and 2 days of just having a quick wash in a portaloo we start looking the business. All them puffy bloodshot eyes, stubbled dirty faces and messy hair seem to add to the effect.

That said the main struggle is trying to get everyone motivated and ready for some pics - i often get called all sorts on Sunday morning, but i think they love me really.

The main problem is finding good sites to use as backdrops, that will offer something new, instead of the same old same old.

No bad mate :)
I absolutelly agree with you guys, I have lost a lot of nice pictures or shots simply because "actors" were not "real looking" - but how Crabtree sad, there is a way - you have to put your guys in good mood (mud works also well :D ). Lack of sleep, food a supplies allways works 8)
Your actors will propably hate you but - Art is born in pain

If you like it, check more of my "filmreels" in http://film.kvalitne.cz/video.htm (some of them are old ones but nice ones :) )
Sorry page is only in Czech

Awesome vid crabtree, really liked it! The beginning is excellent, I had to remind myself it was a re-enactment vid for a bit, but later on I see what you mean about the longer cuts.

Still, awesome, something to aspire to!

Just subscribed to your YouTube channel Marloes. You've done some impressive stuff.
And Gripweed, what a great bit of footage! I agree, the old equipment works the best.
