OK I have a few 35mm slides and some of them could be pre-war?

What I need to do is to view them with out buying any expensive equipment.

So what do you recommend in the way of viewing techniques? I don't mind spending a bit of money if I need to but also I don't want to go down the whole anorak mode because as previously stated? I only want to view and see whats on them.

Any help greatly received.

MIKE.

Probably an old bicycle Edison screw bulb which should be easy to find. If not a simple light source is easy to reproduce.

For the start price of 50p it wouldn't be a financial loss if it ends up in the bin, but that wont happen.

A slide viewer?

Now that is an interesting option.

MIKE.

Technically they are not as such a slide viewer, they are as you say scanners with the facility and ability to scan 35mm negatives and slides to your PC for storage and adjustment etc.

A slide viewer is a lot simpler, basically a diffused screen with a light source and a magnifier for simply looking at the slides.

The image quality these cheap negative scanners is absolute crap though.

Amen to that ... you pay for what you get ... basically I have found the major problem to be that they dont in fact get a close enough register between the scanner and the negative to produce a sharp result .. I have a Cannon Canoscan 9900F, the only commercially available scanner I found that can take all sizes of negatives, and even though that calibrates itself at every scan, as if I compare an image from a negative done on that to one done by a lab, as a stand alone image the scanner one 'looks' OK, there is still a discernible difference in quality.

if you just want to see whats on them first put a sheet of white paper on a piece of glass or perspex and shine a light from behind, put them infront and it will give you an idea as to whether its worth a slide viewer, BTW maplin do cheap ones I think.
