An item from my 'collection'. Ideal for bayonet practice maybe!

Bill/Rat

Rupert is original - dated late 43. I bought it about 20 years ago in Beverley East Yorks of all places. Cost me around £50 - which back then was almost all its money. A handful had been 'let go' as they were flood damaged - you can see a slight stain on the little chap (looks as though hes wet himself)... The remainder stayed in storage, late to be destroyed in a warehouse fire! They are a true relic.

Remember the one in the Film the Longest Day? Apparently - when they were making the film and the Director was shown the 'Rupert' as seen above - he didin't believe it was real or thay looked like that at all. He was even less convinced that the cinema going audience would believe it too - so had the props team produce the US Para rupert as soon in the movie. Trouble is many people now belive the movie Rupert to be correct. If ever in Normandy there is one of the movie Ruperts in the museum at Arromanches.

Hi Chris,

This is very interesting, thanks for sharing the photo, was wondering what length the 'Rupert' is?

Many thanks,

Eddie.

Hes only about 2 feet tall. They work so well because you cannot (or it is difficult to) judge distance and size when looking into the sky - especially at night.

Thanks,

It was hard to judge the size, I can definately see their decoy potential.

There was a good website around that showed a few from other nations that were used in WWII - but I can't find it of late.
