Post subject:  WWII RAF Photo Archive to go online

Hi All,

I guess most of you have already heard, but as of Monday 19th Jan, all 5 million(ish) WWII RAF photos, those currently held at Keele University, will be online at http://www.evidenceincamera.co.uk.

To quote from a certain news website:
"LONDON - A huge British archive of World War II aerial reconnaissance photos, including pictures of the D-Day landings in Normandy, is to go on the Internet on Monday.
Under the digitalization project announced Saturday, some 5 MILLION Royal Air Force photos of Western Europe will be available to the public on the Web site... "

This just in!

Further to previous posting:

"The Aerial Reconnaissance Archives, known as TARA, expects later to release of 2.5 million Luftwaffe German air force reconnaissance photographs of Eastern Europe seized by the Allies at the end of the war.

Anyone attempting to access the site, please post problems or other comments, good or bad.
Hopefully we can report back to TARA, to sort out any glitches.

2 to 1 on, the site jams in the morning, just like the Census one did

The pictures are truly amazing, I came across 3 in a newspaper on Saturday and was gobsmacked that these had gone unpublished! There was one of Omaha beach showing all the landing craft in a mixed up fashon on the shoreline and also one of Auschwitz camp with smoke rising from the towers! Anyone have any idea what resolution these pictures are?

Aparently, somewhere there is also a full colour movie that was taken on Omaha beach by a camera crew that has just "disappeared", lets hope they "find" it and do the same with as they have done with the photos!

Aye, the half-dozen photos sent out as part of the press-pack really are astounding.

Oblique shot from Lightning, (looks like) Utah Beach. June '44
Vertical shot of Arnhem bridge, 10/9/44
Vertical shot, Bismark, (presumably) Tromso Fjord, 21/5/41
Vertical shot, Pegasus and Horsa Bridges, late 6/6/44
Vertical shot, Centre of Cologne, 18/6/45
vertical shot, Auschwitz concentration camp, 23/8/44

Unfortunately, no-one seems to be able to actually get ONTO the site...

The latest "full" URL I have is:
http://www.evidenceincamera.co.uk:8080/arecon/index.
But still no joy.

If anyone does manage to get access, please let us know.

All the best,

It definitely is http://www.evidenceincamera.co.uk

I was on the other night. The traffic at the minute is beyond their wildest dreams though so they are re-designing the entire site (days after launch) and seeking new servers.

Be patient. It's well worth the wait. There are some cracking photos on there already with some 5 million odd still to be catalogued.
