I have a couple of ladies who want to join in on a few of our displays. Unfortunately our group focus on western desert and I don't really know much about the role of women in this theatre.
Can anyone list ideas of units, roles and responsibilities?
Just to get them started on research

Yeah we figured that one already, I like the idea, but difficult to display without the right kit, great excuse to get a Katy ambulance though. I think they are looking for something unusual that a small display can be put together for.

Just the usual stuff for the British Army of the time surely?

Nurses, HQ admin etc

I used to do Hadfield Spears, Private ambulance company. Bunch of upper class gels that were honorary commandos.

Try and find a copy of 'Spearette'. An odd mix of British and French kit...we won an award for displaying as them in North Africa back in 2009 (ish)

But other than that...the usual, WAAF, ATS...clerical, medical...etc

Lots of women stationed in the Middle East. Nurses (obvious), but also ATS and WAAF. Mainly clerical and administrative support roles, but also telegraphy, stores and some technical roles including drivers. Stationed mainly in Cairo, Alexandria etc. rather than out int he desert unlike the nurses who went wherever the field ambulance (CCS, field hospital) went.
Your biggest challenge will be getting the right uniform. Different from men's KD and there's not much original stuff around and virtually nobody makes female KD kit except SofF but I don't know what it's like.

Spearette by Rachel Millin ISBN 0952489732. Interesting book goes for around £25.

It's a great book Paul. Shows what worthwhile jobs women actually did. -_-

'East With Ensa' is another good book if that's something you're interested in. We did a display based on ENSA shows in North Africa, parachute backdrop etc.

So much interesting stuff out there *if* the ladies are interested.
