Possibly one for Kate?

All I have to go on is that the belt that went with the ward uniform (bib apron, grey-blue Peter Pan collared dress etc.) was navy blue? I'm guessing petersham, but what kind of clasp would it have had?

I am thinking either the same sort of webbing clasp used for servicemen, or the current day three-pronged classic nurse's clasp?

Alternatively, i could have it all wrong...in which case please be gentle!

Any help gratefully received! :(

Hi there,

no belt at all for a VAD. They had limited training, weren't qualified nurses and the only belt that they wore was starched white cotton. If you have a teeny tiny waist I have one you can have, if not and you want to copy it I can photos for you.
I have the usual photos of exceptions to the rule. Leather belts, butterfly clasp petersham ribbon belts...but they were not standard or reccomended wear for the VAD.

Kate

Be very careful about loaning original items...also, please keep an eye out for :
*Still missing* Because some folks are devoid of an ounce of honesty or integrity.
Women's Navy Great Coat
Green floor length 1930s evening dress with sleeves set on net.
Blue and white rayon dress with peplum
Black velvet halter necked dress with silver shot thread skirt (may still have Harrods label in it) I have photos of all of these items and I know where they are in Scunthorpe, but would appreciate a nod if they come up for sale. [/color]

Thanks Kate. Umm...teeny tiny waist and I are not what you'd call very well acquainted...29"-30" atm. Pics however would be greatly appreciated, if it's not too much trouble?

Like you, I have lots of photos of VADs with non-conformist belts, but would like to get as close to the original as poss :D

I think it's better to portray the norm and not the exception. Here's the original belt. I put a tape measure next to it so you've got dimensions for buttons (either linen or rubber sanforised) and the width.
And a 29" waist is tiny, despite what these silly magazines would have you believe!
Good luck.

Oh, forgot to say you can still find powdered starch for your apron, veil and belt here:
http://www.starchsupplies.co.uk/laundry ... tarch.html

I mix it in a bowl and use a 99p garden spray to spray it onto the damp fabric. You get the lovely shine on the items as with the originals.
