Q. What has possessed these people to re-make something so classic?

Such things should be left alone!

That ... and of course the fact that there seems to be no more inventiveness, originality etc in the film business ... you only have to look at the sequels produced to see that, the industry for the most part is incapable of coming up with something new ... !!!

I was just thinking this the other day. In days gone by - when a film warrented a sequel it was given a different name "The Pink Panther / Shot in the Dark / The Trail of the pink panther" or "Magnificent Men in their flying machines / Monte Carlo or Bust" etc. Nowadays its just Film and Film 2. So lazy.

you now made me try to work out the first sequal that was just "the XXXXXXX II"

French Connection II 1975?

or

The Godfather Part II 1974?

no it might have been the Danish Sherlock holmes triology from 1908

Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes II, Sherlock Holmes III, Sherlock Holmes VI and Sherlock Holmes V

like all the best triologies it came in 5 parts

This is wrong. It's always been the same right back into the silent era.

Quote:
historically, there have always been at least 15 to 20 sequels in the Top 50 grosses. Even in 2013, only 20 of the Top 50 films were remakes/reboots/sequels, compared to 15 in 1985.

The harsh reality is that audiences pay for sequels, and they aren’t as friendly to new movies as they like to think they are. People like familiar things. They are creatures of habit.

Which reminds me that The Madness of King George was (supposedly) given said title because the play it was taken from - The Madness of George III wasn't acceptable to the distributors as it might make US moviegoers think they had missed the first two installments.

EDIT: Snopes has this as an urban myth, but I'm not so sure

Myth or not - it's completely believable!

Well, it's 100% true that Led Zeppelin were originally called Lead Zeppelin, and were asked to change it to the more obvious sounding 'led' so that the American music market wouldn't keep calling them 'lead' (as in 'dog lead' etc) Zeppelin, obviously missing the whole joke of a Zeppelin made of lead.

The classic one is "Malcolm X", wonder what happened to the other 9 movies???

" The scenes, filmed in Yorkshire, looked quite realistic thanks to the movie's budget "

If the budget is that good, why the hell haven't they got the uniforms and equipment right ....?????
