I chose the Hawker Hurricane, it's easy to repair, robust, tough, and a good gun platform. It also looks damn good as well :d

The bf109 shot down more aircraft than any other aircraft produced making it the most successful fighter of all time 8) .
Erich Hartmann favoured it over the 190 and the 262,and he was the Ace of Ace's (352 Confirmed victories).
i suggest reading his biography "The Blond Knight of Germany" by Raymond F. Toliver and Trervor J. Constable.
A Great Ace (Winner of the Diamonds),a perfect Gentleman and a born leader of Men and somebody i would love to have had the pleasure of meeting.

Another good book on German experimental aircraft is "Last Talons of the Luftwaffe", really fascinating read that is :D

Kozlov,

That wasn't "Last Talons of the Eagle" by Gary Hyland, was it?

I've read "Blue Fires" by the same author. Absolutely fascinating... although the first bit of the book about cults and all that was a little hard going! :?

Oh yeah, I voted for the Hawker Hurricane!

Although my favourite plane is the Messerschmitt Bf 109, I have to atmit that the P-51 is better
But between a Mustang and a Focke-Wulf FW 190D / Focke-Wulf Ta 152H, I think there is a tie.

If the Me 262 was so good, why did his enines blew up after a couple of hours? It could be better if Der Führer didn't order it to become a JaBo and if It came in combat two years earlier, so they could erase the production failures after some years!

look i'm tired of telling you all, marauder, it's the medium that had a bomb load of a heavy, flew like a fighter and looked jolly nice too. when i have time i will list all the marauder firsts, but as that will take days to post i have to do it another time. dodo.

All hail the Merlin, whatever kite its shoehorned into. My poor old Grandfather only had Bristol Murcury lumps growling beside him in his Blenheim as Wop/AG. I voted for the Hurricane as it considerably out numbered the Spit (also a pash of mine) in the Battle of Britian, and should get more credit. It can also take a lot more hammer. I know its an older thread but I haven't been here long.
Obs.

Beaufighter.

Anti shipping, ground attack, night fighter. Whispering death to the japs. Look at the stats for the Coastal Command Strike Wings. Banff, Dallachy, North Coates etc. Dont go for the obvious. :)

It has to be the JU87 "G", a complete beast, and the mount of the best pilot of all time Mr Rudel.

on the allied side, The hurricane fitted with twin 40mm, And the best modern aircraft (well its still around) A10A thundrbolt 2.

Here are some suggestions, that I think deserve a look:

Grumman F4F Wildcat

SBD Dauntless....this may be the best dive bomber of WW2....in fact, it was one of the few of the type that was able to hold its own against fighters

Lancaster

Fairey Swordfish....like the SBD, slow but deadly

Macchi C205 Veltro, a very good Italian late war fighter

One of the greatest British fighter pilots of World War II, Group Captain Duncan-Smith DSO DFC respected both the Macchi and the Italian airmen:

"In general the standard of flying of the Italian pilots was very high indeed, and in encounters with Macchi 205s particularly we were up against aircraft that could turn and dog-fight with our Spitfires extremely well"

Dakota.
Might not be sexy but think of what they would have to use otherwise.

Used everywhere too
