Does anyone know if the waffen ss used "tan and water" reversible parkas?
What were the most widely used types of cammo in either smock or parka? 1940-45. and is Richard underwood the best choice in buying one for authenticity or is there a better choice?
Thanks.

Don't use sumpf (what you call tan & water) for an SS impression. As to likely SS camo patterns, you need to pin down a more specific time period than the five years you quote. This is because the patterns changed throughout the war, and from one unit to another, and from one front to another.... so I suggest you research via a few books or read several internet sites (not just one!)

Impossible question to answer as posed... sorry.

PS RAU is a good source for most things, as is Pantherstore, Militaria.net etc. You get what you pay for so don't be tempted to buy 'cheap' as it is almost always wrong or inferior in some way.... most of us have bought stuff twice before learning the hard way!

Try to get a hold of Europa Militaria n18 - that will sort out out some of the questions you pose.

Thanks , i did see a very good set of "superior quality" y straps on epicmilitaria website. To be honest the quality looks very good and at £55 is well worth buying. It seems that shopping around is the best option and i will look at the sites that were mentioned like "panther" etc.

Buy a greatcoat, all soldiers had one, winter clothing was only issued when required, only to frontline troops and even then not always.

Buy a plain colour, no camo version if you want to stand out in SS circles?

Also remember it was issued as a set (and taken in again when jobs were done).

I've yet to see many folk wearing the trousers though.

They also got utterly filthy very quickl but nearly everyone i see has pristine white ones (i'm pretty guilty of that but mines off white these days...) while I'm normally loathe to use films as examples... Steiners splinter pattern one in Cross of Iron is a cracking example... it's so filthy you can barely make out the patern on it.

They were near impossible to launder in the field because of the blanket lining as they never really dried out in the conditions they were issued for so you *occasionally* got guys PAINTING them white!

Gadge, I read that's why they stopped making the reversible parkas and went for the grey lining due to difficulties in cleaning the white side in the field, but then you probably know that anyway!

Same reason why you rarely see us Soviet reenactors wearing vatni sharovari at events - its too bloody warm for UK summer weather (which is where and when you see reenactors)

The kit was issued for winter warfare in the Soviet Union, which is, unsurprisingly, quite a bit colder than a slightly off day during the British summer.

If its a bit cold the padded jackets are fine, but daytime its nearly always too warm for the trousers. Good for "off season" 24hr events overnight though...

Can't imagine the post-1941 developed fash kit being any different as it was based on their experiences outside Moscow in 1941 when they almost were wiped out by the cold...

A greatcoat is probably more usable reenactment wise (and precisely why a greatcoat wasn't too clever in winter of 41!)

Winter clothing wasn't issued on a general basis(some divisional Quartermaster's acted earlier, most didn't),until March '42. Original colour mouse-grey. SS issued a quilted version. Splinter pattern followed fairly quickly. The SS produced a number of (reenactor porn)items from their own clothing manufacturers for issue to their own troops.
An early war impression would be greatcoat, blanket, items of civilian clothing, go for the homeless ragged look. Captured Russian winter clothing too, although not to much.
