Am i correct in believing the waffen ss helmets (type m40 or m42) were only fitted with the ss runes decals on right side from mid to late war period?
Does anyone know what colour they would have been and if the paint was textured or smooth and also if matt?
thanks ..

Too many years have passed for me to answer in the way you've angled the question.

A reference book I used to use for helmet data was by Ludwig Baer, called Stahlhelm, if I recall correctly.

When doing my German impressions, I prefered to leave the helmet plain...that way it passed for Heer or SS: as limited funds & space meant I couldn't have several role specific helmets. Different cloth helmet covers helped too!

Thanks. I did read that helmet production from style m1935-m1942 altered in ways to cut production costs and waffen ss units were , towards the end of the war , issued with just the ss rune decal , eventually no decals at all.

This site will tell you everything you need to know about the decals:) http://www.german-helmets.com/DECAL%20I ... 20MAIN.htm

For me if I'm going with an M35 I'll happily put 2 decals, M40 1 decal and the same with the M42. The tri colour decal had to be removed simply because it put a nice target on your head so it became regulation.

Decals were stopped totally by 1942, and reduced only to the Heer, Luftwaffe or SS decal in 1940 I think. Paints changed throughout the war starting as an apple green early on and finishing as a dark grey towards the end. Get a good book on helmets, even the Osprey book on German helmets is well worth a look for basic info on helmets.
