Hi all,
Im thinking about buying a deactivated Nazi Kar 98 rifle but I have no idea what makes a good one. (I re-enact 101st airborne so I have little knowledge about German weapons)
So if anyone has any information about what makes a good one like best date or best markings I would really appreciate it.
Cheers

Depends how fussy you want to be: a Creme de la Creme example will be completely original from WWII (matching serial numbers, etc) but you aren't likely to bump into one of those. More realistically, look for one with no obvious postwar markings and ideally has the correct spec stock and fittings for that maker / year. (They varied over time) Post pics here for an appraisal if you see one you like the look of.

There are quite a few of the russian captured K98s arround .

Normally in pretty good condition, but they did have a habit of painting the stocks with a nasty red shellac. It can be cleaned off with a bit of care though.

Didn't they overstamp the metalwork?

The Russian Capture weapons are forced matched i.e. they were all stripped down for refurbishment and the parts were effectively thrown in a pile. The weapons were then reassembled with the next available part and the chamber number electropenciled on to the non-matching parts. You will also see Russian rebuild stamps on them.

They are all refinished (wood and metal) and will need a little cosmetic work to get them back to full German war-time configeration, but it depends on how much of an anorack you are. There used to be a very good thread on this forum on how to put them back to war-time finish.

Nazi K98, you'd have to ask for it's party membership card.
