Here we go, analysis of 21 major operations conducted by the Tank Armies after their formation gives us the following personnel casualty rates.

10% - 3 Operations

10-15% - 11 Operations

20% - 1 Operation

20-30% - 6 Operations

The highest losses, the 6 Operations with 20-30% losses, were all in the first year of Tank Army actions - 1943.

Compare this with the equipment loss rates in the tables already referenced which don't show the same decline.

Source - is Voyenno Istoricheskii Zhurnal Vol 3 1976 quoted in Red Army Tank Commanders by Richard N Armstrong

I'll dig the figures out when I get home tonight. Oddly enough crew survival rates actually improved during the war.

Any idea why?

Funnily enough I've just been participating in a thread about tank crew bail outs elsewhere...

Apparently more experienced crews would tend to bail at the first hit, even if it didn't penetrate, and wait to see what happened next.

This was especially useful against the Germans as they would fire at a target until it burned.

Hmmmm bailing out from a non-penetrating hit?

Sounds like a good excuse for some Nagant pistol ammunition expenditure there!

Easy peasy!

If no further shots come in you can assume the problem has gone away and board the vehicle.

If it continues to get fired at it they'll keep going until it burns and you've got a ko'd vehicle to point at  .

An old friend of mine (sadly passed on now) said that in his mob at least, if a crew bailed out after being hit, they would let Ivan go. If the crew went for their small arms then they would let have it. Fritz knocked out 4 or 5 Soviet tanks with T-mines before being pulled back to work as an instructor. Said he never saw a 'schreck or 'faust until Normandie.

Of prisoners that might be taken in these instances, he said the women always gave trouble, the men generally being more apathetic.
