Comrades,

I have a question for all the Russian SMG gurus out there. Here is a photo of a 1942 PPSh, all matching, with a different kind of rear flip sight. It doesn't have the protective 'wings' around it like you normally see. I've not seen a photo of one before, or read anything about this variety. Does anyone have any more info they would like to share? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Spaciba!

Yes, it's one of the known variants.

These are ...

Rear sight;
1. Tangent
2. Flip sight without 'wings'
3. Flip sight with 'wings'

Front sight;
1. Post without hood
2. Post with oval hood
3. Post with round hood

The commonest type is a combination of rear type 3 and front type 3 though you see all combinations e.g. my Shpagina has rear type 1 with front type 2.

See this site for all things Shpagina... http://www.ppsh41.com/

Frontovik,

Thanks for the info and link! I've been searching through books, magazines, and the internet for photos of this configuration, but with almost no luck. I did find a picture of one in an article found on ppsh41.com, but even that sight is different. It looks like a protective flip sight that has been modified by removing portions of the 'wings.'

It's too bad there isn't a definitive book on the PPSh-41. Hopefully, that will change in the future.
