I'm trying to trace tha military records of a Great Uncle who is sadly no longer with us. He's a bit of a family legend although not much is known about his career!
Unfortunately he emigrated to NZ soon after the war and I only met him a couple of times at family funerals until he died in 1984.
The only 'story' we know is he was at Arnhem in '44 and remained behind with the wounded at the Hartenstein Hotel and taken POW.
His name was:
WALTER CARLILE
BORN WALLASEY, CHESHIRE 1919.
Think his service number was 3773940
Think he was Border Regiment (would have been 1st Batallion)
Taken POW in STALAG 12-A, LIMBURG
POW No 25001

Tried Border Regiment but their research is closed til September (I think)
I could try the Red Cross as they hold POW records.
Any help pointers, hints n tips please greatly appreciated. Any other avenues I could try.
My mum has researched all this but still not 100% we have the right person yet. It's the only info that keeps coming up on sites with the limited info available.
Trying to track down some relatives in NZ for more info.

Any help much appreciated

Thanks in advance

Paul

From "When Dragons Flew" his number was 377"2"940 so worth checking that - he was 19 Platoon of D Company and captured 25th September - 19 Platoon was under Lt Bainbridge and along with the rest of D Company was located part way down the Van Borsselenweg - they became isolated from the rest of the Battalion and when the withdrawal order was sent out only a couple of men from D-Company received it and the rest were captured. I know the son of a Border veteran who has lots of the POW liberation questionnaires so will ask if he has Walters.

In terms of veterans Sgt Northgraves from the platoon was around 5 or so years ago, we met and chatted to him in D Companys area - I had an address for him, but when I wrote him he didn't reply (this was before we met up though) so I can see if I still have it.

Cheers

Alistair

If you manage to get hold of a photo of him I'd be very interested in seeing it.

I'm sure Stuart Eastwood at Carlisle Castle will be happy to help with any info they have, unfortunately they are relocating to another building in the castle at the moment which is probably why they cant help at the moment

Cheers

Alistair

No luck on a Liberation Questionnaire for him, I think the earlier returning POW's filled them in but as the flow of liberated POW's increased they missed lots of them.

If you read http://www.jeanjames.ca/hamlett-prince-of-oak-bay/ about Ernest Hamblett it may be of interest, he was a Border Signaller attached to 19 platoon so it gives a feel for what they were up to - Ron Graydon his fellow signaller passed away last month and was someone who we met several times.

Regards

Alistair
