From when you pull out the pin to when it explodes.

Have a look here:

http://science.howstuffworks.com/grenade2.htm

Cutaway at the top of the page, flash animation at the bottom.
It should explain all you need to know.

All the best,

Depends on the fuse how long you have before it goes off.

Pin pulled, grenade thrown, clip is now not held (by the thrower) and the striker spring pushes the striker down, clip flies off rear end of striker, striker strikes the detonator cartridge held in the anvil, this ignites a slow fuse, the fuse sets of the detonator, the detonator is the initiating charge that sets of the main charge, the main charge shatters the outer casing, and outer casing fragments are propelled a great distance.

All happens very quickly, and is not nice.

Why not? :?

If the enemy suffered from hayfever, they would need more personnel to nurse their troops when they got runny noses and puffy eyes. Their sneezing would give their positions away, and the puffy eyes would make it harder for them to spot their agressors.

The US Army tried a similar idea using fruit. I think it was called a Pineapple grenade.

Wrong about the Pineapple I'm afraid. Wasn't that Hazara tribesmen in 1888 against colonial/Empire troops?

Mills 36 could have a '0' second fuse, i,e, instant as well as 4.5 and 7 sec

A chap told me that the Arabs used to crawl under the wire, knick a box of 36s and throw them back! They stopped doing that after the Brits fitted them with instant fuses. Took them a while to work it out though aparently.
