I am just reading a book about the Bren and it says that the production costs of a Bren MKI was 40/0/0d pounds and a Bren MkII was 30/18/0d pounds.

How much would this be nowadays??

Cheers Sven

Dunno how inflation works but:

my grandad who worked for the GPO during the war earned £2/10, so it would take 4 months to earn £40. The GPO paid reasonably well, so if you assume an average good wage nowadays of £24000, that would equal £8000 for 4 months.

Probably not the way to work it out, but it's certainly interesting.

Mike.

well i typed out a reply earlier but god knows what happened to it, so here it is a gain,
allowing for inflation and how money is re vauled, a 1939 mk 1 bren at £40=modern£151.92p !!! and a 1941 mk2 at £30/18 (rounded up to £31)=£941.47p.
(ospray"brit home front" money convertion chart-all sums are roughly expresed)

There's a typo here. If £30 18 shillings is now £941.47, then £40, cannot be £151.92

ive been told if you convert ww2 prices to decimal ie. 1 pound is £2.40 then mulitiply by 50. so 1 ww2 pound is 120 modern pounds. and for a hundred years ago multiply by 100. but it wont work for things like food which were incredibly expensive then. the average family 100 years ago spent @80% of their income on food, now its about 15%.

hope thats some help
