From what I've read, the last MkVs were made in May 1945, so it's guaranteed to be wartime at least.

Does it say 'Mkv' or 'Mk5' on the magazine housing? The change from Roman to Arabic numerals came in in August 1944 so that can help tie down the dates a little tighter.

According to the Laidler Sten bible, the change from MkV to Mk5 was officially authorised on 17 November 1944. Production ended in May 1945.

Right i have had a another look at my MkV and on the underneath of the magazine housing it has STEN MkV 149551 on the top of the housing it has M/78 on the metal collar of the stock it has 235990 stamped on it. Does this help date it?

Sounds like an ROF Fazakerley assembled gun with an Elkington (M/78) made magazine housing. I've read that ROF Fazakerley made circa 400K MkV Stens which would put your number at the earlier end of production. Mid 1944 as an idle guess?
