Just a quick ask, does anyone know the most common regiment for volunteer feeder into the commando please ?
When did they adopt the green beret, and when if at all did they stop wearing the black hackle ?

Im looking to put together another commando impression ( already have 47 commando )

So, am I correct so far.........
Early on tam with hackle and retain their original cap badge, late on green beret with hackle and with or without cap badge ?

Cheers
Steve :)

Good question mate, a friend and I were looking into this as well, a slightly more specific aspect mind you...I may be able to help answer your question tomorrow - going to delve further into the books!

I'd like to know which commando unit was allegedly made up of a vast number of London(?) Coppers! As I'd heard whispers about them, and it would be nice to do something close to home! :D

Regards

Euan

That would be a real help mate.
I know No9 were formed as a Scottish commando in the main and then transferred to a Welsh HQ.
Cant seem to find anything relating to wearing the green beret with the soldiers original cap badge along with the hackle ? I know pre green beret there were a hell of alot of different mixes of headwear worn within the commando as they retained parent regimental caps etc and looked a somewhat mix up and the brass took a dim view...
Looking like green beret with just the hackle is the way to go !

Keep me updated on your search

Cheers
Steve

From what I can gather myself over the times I've looked into No.9, similar. Prior to the adoption of the green beret, and as can be seen in a lot of photos, the use of the 'Tam with a black hackle is near enough unit wide, rather than the medley of other regimental cap badges and headwear seen in other Commando units. Once the green beret was adopted, I've only seen the black hackle worn with that.

Ultimately it would seem that prior to the adoption of the green beret and black hackle, the 'Tam with a black hackle was the sole unit headwear during 1941 and through 1942 until the beret appears.

I'd obviously say never say never, but it appears a good rule to work from!

Hi Philip,
Thanks for the input chap, I now have a choice of correct headgear for either period !

Now then, has anyone got a battle jerkin going ?

Cheers
Steve
