Over the weekend I was talking to a lad who had string wrapped around the foreend and pistol grip of his SMLE (actually it was a Denix that he'd put into a real stock). I asked him about it, and he said that some soldiers wrapped string like this to improve grip. I find this rather difficult to believe, and think that he's seen photos of wire wrapped grenade launching SMLEs and has jumped to conclusions.

Does anyone know of any photographic evidence supporting his theory of string wrapped SMLEs? Or is has he indeed just jumped to incorrect conclusions?

Cheers
Joe

I agree that hes just seen wire wrapped grenade rifles and copied the idea with out knowing what it was really for. I don't know why anyone would wrap string around the stock for grip, wood has good grip, its been used for centuries with no issues. I personally think that the string would come loose, stretch when wet, cause friction on skin and just be a general PITA.

Just been watching the Lee Enfield story and the Small Arms Training School at Warminster has some string bound examples for grenade use even shows a "damaged" one and the string is still tightly bound.....

There not string, they are wire bound, string would be of no use for grenade launching.
