I've got a bayonet for my P14 rifle and it's starting to look a little tired and worn (just like its owner! ). Can anyone suggest the best way to spruce it up, both blade and handle, without damaging it?

Remove the wooden grips (carefully - they may not wish to be moved!) and rub them down with some fine wire wool and some light soapy solution which ought to get the cack out. remember to re-apply a dose of linseed oil (using a synthetic cloth) once they're clean.

The blade should have an almost galvanised finish. I'd recommend rubbing it down with a good soft cloth and some three in one oil (or use the Redex based stuff). That should clean and protect. Then simply put it all back together.

Use may wish to re-blue some areas with G96, too.

As for the scabbard, put some feed on the leather and oil down the steel parts. Don't try and take it apart.

If it were me, though, I'd just leave it (depending on the state of it).

Any pics before you start?
