Mk1 scabbards are quite common, unless you have a serial number around the throat, in which case it will be from the mk1 cruciform bayonet, of which there are quite a few around now but are still classed as rare.

Markings are as follows, No.4 MK.1 (up arrow) SSB1940 The bayo I got with it is a MK.II savage. So worth tuppance really.

SSB could be:

Sheffield Steel Products
Sheffield Smelting Co. Ltd. Birmingham
Standard Sporting Guns, Birmingham
Standard Spring Co. West Bromwich

No4 Scabbard Production Orders only exist from 1/1/41, but the first 2 contracts are as follows:

1/1/41 Scbd No4; Vanden Plas; 150,000 units
1/1/41 Scbd No4; Sheffield Steel Prod.; 120,000 units

So looks like it could well be by Sheffield Steel.

Arrg when you look at it one way is sats SSB4940 but the other it looks like SSB1940 the lsat 3 digits are very clearly 940.
