If anyone can add any details to any of these I'd be very interested to hear them.

Alistair,

Could you do a scan of Tpr Bailey's qualifications page? I now have a few Recce paybooks and they normally have an "intersting" entry on them... Just wondered if this one does too...

Cheers

PJ

Will do Pete, however from memory it has nothing much, like a few of the paybooks its the returned POW replacement so has very little filled in, I dont suppose you know anything about his time with Recce do you?

Alistair,

Cheers mate! Information on the Recce lads who made it to the bridge is fairly scant...

Bailey was with B Troop in Italy but was always getting into trouble. The squadron diaries mention him for various wrong-doings, so he was moved to HQ troop where he did spend time as Freddie Gough's and the SSM's driver. I dont have any more on him than that...

Cheers

PJ

Sounds interesting - do any of your lads have copies of the War Diaries?

I had been told he was Gough's driver but then I'm sure I read somewhere that Gough switched drivers during the battle so wasnt sure where that put Bailey. the paybook itself isnt the most riveting - but it does have nice paperwork with it - I'll see if I have that scaned in my files or if I can get to it easily.

Meant to ask, when you mention interesting entries in Recce Paybooks, do you mean just Airborne Recce or in general?

Alistair

Pete - no entries on the training page - his earlier book would I'm sure have shown some interesting entries but not this one.

Rich - Thanks for the offer, Pegasus Archive has the War Diaries for September 44 online.

Cheers

Alistair,

All the Abn Recce paybooks I have seen have an entry for a certain course which seems to have been fairly unique to them and was wondering if this one had it too.

I have a complete copy of the war diary from the NA at Kew (it fills four box files...). I cant get to it at the moment but when I can would you like copies of the pages which relate to Tpr Bailey?

I have looked at scans of Trooper Tolleys paybook (I got scans of this from a relative of his) and nothing jumps out - but he was a post Arnhem replacement so not sure if it relates to earlier members of the Squadron.

If you could manage to get me copies of the relevent bits that would be great.

Thanks

Alistair

From further research Alfred Berg was captured at Arnhem with 250 Company RASC.

A new one to add

Image
Image

James Pearson who was a Glider Pilot, he was pilot of a Glider carrying a detachment from 9th Field Company RE to Sicily when they were cast off early - he was captured but later when being moved by train he and 2 other jumped but he broke his hand so after a bit when he needed treatment the group split and he went his own way, he stayed on the run for 4 months until recaptured.
