Hi all,

this is to present the 70th anniversary commemorations of the battle of Saint-Marcel (Morbihan, Brittany, France).
I can already hear you say "what? Never heard about it", and I can easily understand it as it was like hidden by the success of the invasion in Normandy. So let's make a short introduction.

Saint-Marcel was one of the largest "maquis" in occupied France as it gathered over 2.000 Resistance fighters and around 250 Free french SAS, first of whom were dropped in the very first hours of 6th June 1944. The Maquis was attacked by the Wehrmacht on 18th June, causing the men to scatter in smaller groups. The French SAS stayed in the operation area until late August.

To commemorate these fights, we are organising a living history event which will include scenes of military and civilian life from 1939 to 1945.

How can you help?
We are looking for reenactors who can fit in our themes:
- LRDG (to fit in a Libyan desert scene with SAS)
- Resistance fighters
- 40s civilians
- Free French SAS (2° RCP / 4th SAS)
- US War Correspondents & photographers

If you are interested in participating, or would like some information about this event, please use the email addresses below or PM me. Participating is free - you only have to bring a good impression.
Of course, you will be welcome as a simple tourist too! You will see Brittany is a very nice place to visit.

Was probably tired yesterday... Of course it is 2014, not 2013. Topic title corrected.

We are already expecting around 280 reenactors from all over France.

It sounds an interesting event but I reckon you could be suffering from a post Normandy problem. Those guys likely to be going to France will probably already be committed to something around the 6th, on one beach or another. Can't see many being able to hang on or go back for the 20th, but best of luck with your event and I hope it goes well.

Yes indeed, it will probably be a problem... We decided to post it here though as it could be interesting to some people, the themes being different from Normandy (some guys on here do French SAS, War photographers or Resistance for example).
Many thanks for wishing us luck, hopefully some will be able to attend though or come as visitors!

The anniversary is getting closer everyday and we are keeping up the work to offer you a great event.

French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian will attend the military ceremony on Friday 20th June, as well as British and American official representatives. French and British veterans will honour us with their presence during the weekend.

Went to Brittany as 6th Armored once, it was very well received, and I think it is important to acknowledge WW2 did not start late on June 5th and end early on June 7th 1944

Time for a short debriefing!

In a hot and sunny weather, over 250 reenactors from all over France and even Belgium gathered to make this event a great success. Over 30.000 visitors discovered our displays, and 12 SAS veterans honoured us with their presence, including 3 British SAS veterans. Many Resistance veterans also attended the commemorations, along with today's soldiers from the 1er RPIMa (French Special Forces Regiment).

Many thanks go to all members of public too, and I'm sure there were some British people among them! (I heard them!)

Pierre

Salt Pierre,
was there too, nice displays. Liked the SAS and LRDG. Don't know where you got that old civilian car but was spot on. Looked for you but couldn't find you.
Am also part of the AFPSAS, representing the 79 comitee.
A bientôt.
Phil

I hope you all had a great event. It was too far away for our SAS group to saddle up. Sadly.

Salut Phil !
Thanks for the comment, nice to know you enjoyed the displays.
I think I saw you during Friday's ceremony near the veterans "tent", were you there? I was in my French Navy dress at this moment, as a reserve officer. But most of the time I was running here and there, didn't have much time to meet other people...
A bientôt,
Pierre

Hi André,
yes we really enjoyed the moment, we were excited and proud to organise such an event at Saint-Marcel for the 70th anniversary. Great moments meeting the veterans too.
Maybe you'll be able to join another year!
Your WACO glider project can be interesting for us too, as some were used in Brittany to deliver their jeeps to the French SAS in August 1944.

Is Saint Marcel an annual event? We will look at it in 2015 if available.

Problem that its a 1000km trip with jeeps and equipment. We should use the WACO.

Anyway, the WACO replica will be on display during the Market Garden events between 12 and 22 september.

Our (French) SAS group is mainly concentrating on Operation Amherst 1945. There will be a 70 year commemoration and mock battle in Westerbork, 12 april 2015. Feel free to join us.
Veterans will be invited but we know its a strech for them to travel this far so we will wait and see who is there.

Cheers, André

It is basically an annual event, but this year's commemorations were of course much larger than other years. We now plan to recreate each year just a "Maquis" part with French SAS, Jedburghs and FFIs, and period civilan life.
Of course you will be most welcome if you can make the trip!

Cheers
Pierre
